My Grandfather, Tsgt Harry J. Walker, Sr. was in the 78th from the 13th of December 44 at the Sigfried Line through April 45 and Dillenburg. He died at the age of 43, my Grandmother said it was the Bulge that killed him, just years later. R.I.P. Pops Gary L. Walker, Sgt (ret) USAF

Hi guys. I met a few of you at Reading. I took over the former 502/511 unit that Curt Otto and Bill Clark were a part of. We've changed to the 517th, for good. Yhe reason I'm contacting you is, a patient of mine, here in Maryland, recently passed away. He was a member of A 1/309 an a member of the 78th Assn. His wife, knowing I was a WW2 buff, gave me boxes of issues of the "Flash". Some date back to the 70's. Also included are programs from memorial services and National reunions. I really have no use for the well over 100 magazines, but would like to give them to your unit or someone in the unit that would like them. Great website! You are doing the 78th a great honor with your unit. My grandfather was a jeep driver with 309th mortar platoon with the the 78th. He saw action with in the Huertgen forest and was wounded when the 78th took the the town of Schmitt Germany. He recovered and rejoined the unit soon after to fight in the Battle of the Bulge. After the Bulge he drove his jeep across the Ludendorff bridge at Remagen. Soon after he crossed the bridge his unit was ordered to take the Erpel Ley. While the infantry was taking the heights and clearing the Germans from the area he was ordered to stay behind with the mortar tubes. While sitting in his jeep a emeny mortar round landed no less than 4 feet from the left side of the jeep. His jeep number was 13, I guess that was a lucky 13. Fortunatly for the Ungers it was a dud. He later went on to Berlin and was sent to Fort Indian Town Gap to be returned to civilian life. My Grandfathers name is James K. Unger and he is 89 years old though you'd never know it. He remains a active member of his local VFW and American Legion. I greatly appriciate the sacifices made by "The Greatest Generation" I too am a re-enactor of the 101st out of Ohio. I have my father-in-law's footlocker from WWII. It still has the tray insert although it is coming apart and the outside hinges need repair. Do you want it? We are moving & just don't have the room for everything. I am in Coal City, Indiana. I work at Clay City Elementary School although I won't be there Monday and Tuesday. Do you have someone around the Terre Haute area who would want this? The outside is in excellent condition other than the hinges on the back. Hello, great site!!! My Grandmothers brother died April 10th, 1945 somewhere near Ittenbach, Germany. His name was Robert R. Walton. He was in the 310th reg. Company "I" for the first part(Hurtgen, Kesternich, Ardennes, etc.) and Company "E" from atleast Jan 11th until death. He died a staff sargeant from sniper fire. He had a friend named Jonny Reese who was in an attached FA. I have 8 letters from him and a few historical 78th history books. I would love to hear from anyone who knew him. I would also love to know what company E and I's platoon breakdown was. Thank you to all the veterans that have served, God Bless You!!!!

I was a member of the 78th Division, Co. B & Service Co, 310th Infantry from March, l943 to November, 1945, when I received enough points to get my discharge. Our company commanders were Captain Cahill, Captain Hardenburg and last was Captain Bergida, lst Sgt. Gus Lamborghini. Sgt Shell was our squad leader, Sgt. Blatewicz was platoon sgt. lst Sgt Lamborghini appointed me the company clerk in Camp Butner and I remain there through the war and was finally promoted to Sergeant Major of Personnel section for regiment in September, l945 after the war. I met some of the finest and bravest young man of my life. I know a lot of them have passed away now, but God will bless them, where ever they are. Those still with us, stay healthy and safe, the best to you always.

At the American Military Cemetery Henri-Chapelle (Belgium) I adopted 7 graves (and in the Netherlands also 4) of American soldiers. They were fighting for our freedom during the Second World War. I also built a website for my adopted soldiers, the address is www.heroesforever.nl I hereby want to ask you if you can help me to gather more information about the soldier whose grave I have adopted. Of course I now have a lot of questions about SSgt. William H. Hess and the role he fulfilled in the WWII. I am pointing on information like; how did he look like (in uniform). How he spent his youth, at what base he had his education, what kind of hobbies he had, the way he died, how he was as soldier and as person self. If his standard weapon was a machine gun or a rifle, was he married or did he have a girlfriend or children, how the weather conditions where during the fightings. Did he went through man against man fights, how was he during his training and leave, and other stories I forgot to ask you about him and so on. As you can see, there are a lot of things I would like to know about SSgt. William H. Hess that it is too much to write down. I would like to ask you if it is possible to help me finding an answer to the above mentioned questions. Hopefully it is also possible to receive some pictures of him and copies of some documents and maybe to correspond with some of his relatives. I really hope to receive an answer to my letter. I was searching on internet and hoped to find some information about William H. Hess, but unfortunately without any results. You are my last hope for help. My Dad, Doyle Puckett, was a Combat Engineer assigned to the 303rd Combat Engineer Battalion. I don't know which Company he was in. Dad didn't talk much about his WWII service, but when he did, it was almost always about the fine young men with whom he served rather than tales of battle. This is a great website and the music is great! I am 84 year old WWII vet and member of the 95th Infantry Division Association and a member over 40 years. I was a PFC in D-547th AAA Bn. attached to the 95th Sept. 1944-May 1945. Last week I attended the reunion at Toledo, OH of the 95th. We had only 72 vets there and a lot of family there. We will have a reunion next year in Oklahoma City, OK with the help of the 95th IT (Reserves). We have another great website and it is www.95divassonication.com. I have a friend that was in the 78th Div and he was wounded and leg amputated. He was a replacement and wounded the first hour of his first day in combat. I'm a Psychologist from Raleigh, NC. I have no connection to the 78th Division, however, for the past 25 years I have worked in the town of Butner, NC. I became intersted in the division went I found out that they trained here during the early 1940's. As you can imagine, very little remains of the old trainig camp, except the original water tower, a few warehouses, a recreational facility that may have doubled for a movie theater, and part of the old hosptial which became a state mental hospital. My office sits on the site of some the old barracks. I wonder what it must have been like for the thousands of young men who trained here knowing they were heading off to war soon. I have nothing but the upmost respect for the young soldiers who trained on this ground and went off to Europe so may years ago. (bturner10@nc.rr.com)

Hello, My name is Rick Grossklaus I collect WW2 uniforms and had the oppertunity recently to aquire a uniform from the 303rd engineers [cbt] The uniform consits of an officers coat and his ike jacket. The coat has a silver star and bronze star with oak leaf device He was a first Lt. ike jacket has the US ssi and lapel patches indicating possible advisor during the occupation. Also 2 unknown ribbon bars on service coat. Does anyone know who this man was as there are no names anywhere that I could find. Great site and commitment to all these heroes. My Dad, 1st LT John E. Ward, of the Lightning Division recently passed February 1, 2008. He was a forward observer with the field artillery in Battery A, 903rd Field Artillery Battalion, decorated with the Bronze Star, although he truly felt the medals and decorations belonged to the guys who gave their lives. Dad was from Great Valley, NY and finished his career as a public school principal in Buffalo, NY. He talked more about his experiences earlier in his life, but got further from the war years as he got older. Of course losing more comrades each year did not help. He joined the Buffalo 78th Division Veterans Association and became its Commander-although they were all WW 1 veterans. Coincidentally his wife-my mother-Rita Brenon-of Tonawanda , NY-had an uncle, PVT. Chester Hoffman who also served in the 78th Division in WW 1 with the USAEF. He was an infantryman in Company M, 311th Infantry Regiment. He was Killed In Action in France on 25 October 1918 at the Battle of Grande Pre in the Meuse-Argonne offensive. I have some records of all kinds of stuff I don't want to throw out, but cannot keep them all. I need an email address, a snail mail address, and a fax to where I can send it or copies to whoever is going to keep and maintain the central records. This is a labor of love-and respect-for the veterans of this unique division in 2 World Wars-which I am glad to help out in. Thank you for such a wonderful web site. My Dad PFC Donald E.McCain was in 78th Infantry Division 903rd Field Artilery Battery A From 1944-1945. He is a healthy 85 years old and I was trying to get some information of what medals he may have and where he was in the war.I love the map on your site but I am unable to down load it. Some of the people he had mentioned was Sgt.William O'Scrogum or Capt.J D Johnson My Dad did mention being at the Sigfrid line,Lamersdorf,Hirtken Forest also the battle that took place while protecting the bridge that crosses the Rhine River as well as telling about how one of the artillery groups of there wing was out of ammo and getting hammered by the Germans and part was due to the air cover was grounded due to poor weather conditions. my dad mostly ran machine guns and 105mm howitzers for the 903rd.which was trying to due there best to protect the the artillery battery that was beeing attacked. My father, William Steward, was a Bronze Star, Purple Heart recipient and was a member of the 78th Divison, K-Co. He passed away on Dec. 3, 2006 and was buried at Dallas-Ft. Worth National Cemetery. He never forgot his buddies from K-Co or the 78th, especially those from K-Co who were killed near Remagen and the Seig River. Many people never knew that he was also known as "The Little Christmas Man," by all the German children at the end of the war. He helped gather blankets and food for the German orphans. My father served again in Korea, less than 100 miles from where his baby brother, David Steward was killed in action at the Naktong River. Dad brought his brother's body home from Korea. Great website! Thanks to all for serving. I appreciate the impressionists for paying attention to detail, and for their passion in keeping the history and memories alive. All people, young and old alike will forever benefit from the education you provide. I'm just beginning intense research into my Grandfather's WW2 history as he died 04 Dec.87 (heart attack when I was 15yrs.old) and I never had the chance to interview him properly. I know he joined the US Army 14 Dec.42, and didn't get to Europe until approx. 08 Mar.45, at which time he was part of the 309 Inf/78th Lightning Div. as a regular PFC/ Rifleman. The rest of the story is still hidden in history....for now. Gramp's name was William J. "Billy" Catrabone from Erie, PA. Gramp had many friends in the unit, all of whom were seemingly separated forever after they came home in Mar.46. I have a small amount of photos at this point, some of which are very clearly displaying the uniform with the 78th patch. I also found that Gramp and his buddies liked to hang-out in Davos, Switzerland, and I've already spoken to some Swiss that may have connections to him. It's very exciting. Gramp didn't keep much WW2 memorabilia, but I have an original patch from him, his ribbons, some Nazi relics, and a few pictures. It's also very interesting that throughout my life Gramp had a gold Remagen Bridge class-type ring with the 78th insignia on it as well as other things, including the bridge and dates. Unfortunately my Grandma let a "junk collector" buy many items, including the ring for almost no money following his death. I am a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and serve as our Chapter's Fly-In Manager. We hold this event each fall at the Winchester Regional Airport in Winchester, Virginia. This year we were approached by several re-enactor groups interested in coming to our event. One, a WWII British Paratroop Unit did attend and had a good time. Planning for next year has already begun and I was just "surfing" re-enactor units in our area. I was pleasantly surprised to see your site and that you are located not too terribly far away. My father, Rinard T. Largent was a Captain in the 303rd Combat engineer battalion attached to the 78th. He is now 92, in a nursing home, but his memories of his time in Europe in late 1944 and into 1945 are still quite vivid. We are still able to watch some of the home movies (now on video) he took while overseas. He was a little chagrined not to see any mention of the 78th at the Bulge or at the Ludendorff bridge in Ken Burns recent program I know it's a bit far but if you have any interest in spending a weekend in the Shenandoah Valley next Fall please don't hesitate to contact me. I am researching a WW 2 Medic, T/4 Gilbert S. Tabor, Jr. Gilbert was assigned to "I" Company, 3rd Battalion, 309th Inf Reg, 78th Inf. Div. On 6 February 1945, T/4 Tabor, when 5 casualties were incurred by cross fire from enemy machine guns located in a pillbox and a dugout, volunteered to attempt to reach them. He ran and crawled over 75 yards of open terrain and administered to them. As he began to evacuate the first casualty, the man was wounded a second time. Tabor stopped and while treating this second wound, was himself shot. His gallant action resulted in saving the lives of 3 of the men. This information is taken from the silver star citation awarded T/4 Tabor. He died of those wounds on 24 April 1945. I am compiling information on Gilbert for a tribute I am preparing in his honor that will be placed in a prominate place in our American Legion Home. (Millerton, NY American Legion Post 178). Thank you for honoring all the heroes who served. My grandfather Floyd Canup served in the 78th (311th/K I believe) in WWII from Nov. 44 through a few months after the war in Europe. I would like to compliment the 78th on the great re-enactment they demonstrated on Saturday. What you did for the veterans was wonderful and I know they very much appreciated it. The battle that took place in the afternoon was great. The smoke and the constant gun shots made it feel so real. After the battle I enjoyed walking around and talking with the different re-enactors. I would have liked to speak with more of the 78th guys but when I went to their room in the yellow building and older gentleman was in there yelling how it was not time to stand around and talk, there was work to be done. I was very disappointed in this and for the first time that day felt very unwanted at Ft. Mifflin.

I want to inform you that one of your bretheren has died as of Tuesday the 8th. Staff Sargent Gerald Matison passed on in Minnesota, his home, due to complications with Shingles and Dialasis. His funeral is tomorrow (Friday) at Fort Snelling National Cemetary where he will be laid next to his wife who died 14 years ago. I am his eldest grandson. He is survived by his daughter, 2 grandsons and their wives, and 6 great grandkids. He will be missed sorely. All i wanted to say is i think what your doing is awesome. I'm thinking of getting into the hobbey. My grandfather on my mothers side,joined up in 1939,and was a member of the 202nd.coast artillery,which was disbanded because their equipment was out of date, mostely ww1. My grandfather on my fathers side was a member of 1st. army division, he was born and raised in bridgeville deleware. He was in italy, france, belgium, and finally germany in 1945. He was hit in germany from from artillery fire from what he called those dam 88s. He survived, and passed away in feb 2000.I'm in the pennsylvania army national guard,no i havent gone to iraq yet, but the little bird is telling me 2010. Anyway thank you for what your doing is a great tribute to all ww2 veterns and history.

He signed up to support his mom & siblings. Members of the 78th Infantry Division Association, One of my co-workers had an uncle who was a member of the 78th Inf. Div during WW2 and I have been doing some research for him. I came across your website, which I will share with him, and am very impressed. I am involved with the Union County of Ohio living history society and do some reenactments. I am also the president of the 94th Inf. Div. Association Alliance which is a group of volunteers who will carry on after the original members of the 94th deactivate as an association. Great website! My grandfather, Guy I. Wetherell was a private with Co. F, 210th, 78th ID before he was shipped over to England with the 9th Div. for the invasion of Normandy. He always hated that he and some of his friends were split up and sent to different divisions. He did some boxing and played basketball for the 310th while at Camp Butner. I have many of his letters from his time there, as well as a couple photos of him in uniform (with the Lightning patch visible on his left shoulder). My grandfather was a squad leader for a short time before he punched a cook and was demoted back to private. While in the 9th he was wounded outside of St. Lo but recovered back in England and then the States. He passed away in August 1999 and rarely spoke about the war. It's good to see that the sacrifices made by the men of his generation are still honored.
